FDA Issues Voluntary Recall For Prominent Thyroid Medication

Nowadays, we use medications more often than earlier. Although this happens very rarely, we all know that it is confusing when the medication is called back because of problems in production.

For example, not long ago, the Federal U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) optionally recalled a thyroid medication.

Details Of The Recall

This thyroid medication has Levothyroxine and Liothyronine. Both of these treat hypothyroidisms.

As stated by the FDA, the medication was called back due to some deficiency in the production process, which was established during the inspection in 2017 by the Chinese manufacturer of one of the ingredients included in these medications.

Whereas the FDA asked for a recall of the medications, they also brought out the information that patients are advised to carry on with these old medications till they get the new one. They explained that the medications mentioned above are required for difficult medical states; thus, it is better not to stop taking the medication.

What Is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. These hormones are crucial in our body due to their ability to command in which manner our body uses the energy. When these hormones are reduced, numerous body operations decline.

These are some of the several signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism:

  • Weight gain  – Fatten
  • Joint and muscle pain   –  Pain in your joints or muscles
  • Constipation    –  Infrequent  bowel movements
  • Depression    –    Melancholy

Hypothyroidism Treatment

Levothyroxine and Liothyronine are the ingredients used in this treatment.  The purpose of the treatment is to replace the hormone which the body cannot create by these medications. Therefore, Liothyronine is actually this hormone, and Levothyroxine reduces the volume of the boosted glands (goiter) and treats thyroid cancer.

For each person the dosage is different. This is established by conducting some blood tests and modifications in the dosage as long as the exact amount is actualized.

This medication helps tremendously in controlling hypothyroidism.  In consequence, if you want to have a good thyroid hormone level, it is very important to be persistent and use this medication regularly.

That being the case, keep your old medication until you get your new one. Whenever you are not sure about the prescription, you can always consult your doctor.

Conclusion
